FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Haverford College baseball team (2-0) swept its first two games of the 2016 season, a doubleheader against Dominican University (1-4) in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Fords won both games by scores of 9-4. Similarly, they spread their run production throughout each game, scoring runs in five different innings in the first game and six different innings in the second.

Over the span of the two games, Ben Verducci hit 4-for-8 including two doubles with three runs scored and four batted in. He also walked once and stole two bases.

Haverford didn't waste any time, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning in game one as sophomore Spencer Sohmer doubled, driving in Verducci for the first run of the season. The Fords never trailed as they were led by their consistent bats. The first through sixth hitters batted a combined 12-for-23 (.522) and five batters enjoyed multiple hits in the game. On the mound, opening day starter Justin Herring struck out six over five innings and gave up three runs (two earned) while picking up the win. Grant Finn came in for the save.

In game two, Haverford took advantage of six Dominican University errors as only three of its nine runs were earned. The Stars tied the game, 4-4, in the fourth inning but Haverford willed the last five runs to pick up the comfortable victory. Haverford starter Patrick O'Shea earned the win after pitching four innings and striking out three. He gave up just one earned run.

Haverford will look to continue its success in sunny Florida on Monday with a doubleheader against Thiel College beginning at 9 a.m.
