Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Thiel College

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Haverford College baseball team (3-1) split its doubleheader with the Thiel College Tomcats (2-1) in Fort Myers, Fla. on Monday as part of the Gene Cusic Classic.

The first game ended 3-2 in favor of Thiel after the Tomcats hit a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning to score the winning run. Haverford did all of its damage in the second inning when shortstop Ben Furlong singled to score Nick Ott and then Thomas Vollaro doubled, driving in Furlong. Junior outfielder Yannick Villanueva went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles in the contest.

On the mound, starting pitcher Stephen Ridings racked up eight strikeouts in four scoreless innings. He walked just two and gave up only four hits, making short order of the Tomcats. Thiel starter Kevin Forrester went the distance for the complete game.

Game two went 7-5 in the way of the Fords, sparked by a four run second inning and two more runs in the fifth. Furlong picked up where he left off in the first game, batting 2-for-3 with a run scored and two batted in. The sophomore infielder finished the day 3-for-6 with two runs and three RBI between the two games. First baseman Ben Verducci and outfielder Ethan Lee-Tyson both went 2-for-4 in the game. The Fords displayed good patience at the plate, going down on strikes just three times as a team in the contest.

Haverford starter John Miraglia punched out seven Tomcats over four innings in earning the win. Tom Phillips came in to pick up the save.
