HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College baseball team (9-3) split its home-opening doubleheader with St. John Fisher (8-6) on Saturday afternoon at Kannerstein Field. The Fords couldn't stop the Cardinals in game one, 10-6, but edged them in game two, 3-2, headlined by an excellent outing from starting pitcher Justin Herring.

Herring sliced his way through St. John Fisher's lineup, striking out ten and walking none over seven innings. The sophomore righty gave up just three hits in the contest, leaving Cardinal batters wondering what happened to their offensive success earlier in the day.

In game one, both teams went hit-less until the third inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Fords' offensive was sparked by a Matt Goss RBI double to drive in Ethan Lee-Tyson. The very next batter, Spencer Sohmer singled to score Goss. Later in the inning, Nick Ott singled home Sohmer to give Haverford a 3-2 lead. Ott finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and another batted in.

The Cardinals would retake the lead in the next half inning, but Haverford chipped away with runs in the fourth and fifth, which included a two-run single by Ben Furlong.

Also in game one, John Masella came in to pitch six innings of relief, surrendering just one run and striking out two.

Game two was more of a pitcher's duel, advantage Herring. Haverford did all of its offensive damage in the fourth inning. There aren't any lights at Kannerstein Field, but the power was definitely on: Goss hit a solo home run to put the Fords on the board, and later that inning, Zach Taylor homered as well to drive in Ott. Taylor finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Between the two games, Goss went a combined 4-for-7 with two runs and two RBI.

Dave Beccaria's Fords will take Kannerstein Field again on Wednesday, March 23, to face Rowan at 3:30 p.m. in their last home game before the first week of April.
