HAVERFORD, Pa. -- The Haverford College baseball team was overwhelmed by Alvernia in a non-conference game at Kannerstein Field on Wednesday and fell 20-6. The Fords had been carrying a four game winning streak into Wednesday's contest. During the streak, Haverford outscored its opponents 33-6.

Despite the final score, the game was competitive for the majority of the time as Alvernia did not pull away until the later innings. The Fords fell to an early three run deficit, but fought to chip away at the lead. In the fourth inning, Ethan Lee-Tyson reached base via a single, advanced to second on a ground out, and then stole third before scoring on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Zach Taylor was bunted home by Yannick Villanueva after stealing second and then advancing to third on an error. The Fords tied the game in the fifth on a sac fly by Ben Verducci.

In the sixth, the Fords struck again when Taylor hit an RBI triple to the wall in right center to score Spencer Sohmer. The next batter, Sam Partee, grounded to short to score Taylor. The Fords would score once more in the ninth inning when Partee reached on a wild pitch.

Taylor finished with two runs and an RBI. Short stop Ben Furlong went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Starting pitcher Tom Phillips struck out two over five innings.

The Fords are in action again Friday with a Centennial Conference road trip to Swarthmore. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Haverford will then return home to play a doubleheader on Saturday against Dickinson.
