HAVERFORD, Pa. - In the second game of a home-and-home conference series, the Haverford College baseball team was blanked by visiting Ursinus by a final score of 2-0. David Drea tossed a complete game shutout for the Bears, surrendering just five hits and one walk while striking out a pair on 96 pitches. Haverford falls to 10-12 on the season (3-1 CC) while Ursinus gets its first Centennial Conference win to improve to 6-11 (1-3 CC). 

Haverford sent Nathan Bass to the mound and the first year hurler for the Fords pitched admirably, with both sides unable to generate much offense until the top of the sixth inning. Spencer Sohmer roped a two-out double against Drea in the bottom of the first but was stranded. On the other end, Bass stranded Ursinus runners in the second and third innings before tossing a perfect frame in the fourth. Ursinus looked to push across the opening run of the contest in the fifth as Jerry Scavone singled to lead off the inning and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Bass hit Drew Roesch with a pitch, but induced a Travis Kozak line out to end the threat without a run crossing the plate.

In the sixth, Ursinus plated the opening run of the contest. Alex Mumme doubled to left center and went to third on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Carter Usowski. On the attempt, Bass made an excellent grab on the bunt attempt to get the sure out at first base. Mike Stanziale then singled up the middle to plate Mumme for a 1-0 lead. The run would hold as the winning margin. Haverford had an excellent scoring opportunity in the sixth inning as Will Karp was hit by a Drea pitch with one out and stole second. Ethan Lee-Tyson walked, but Drea stranded the pair.

In the seventh, the Fords again had designs on leveling the score. Furlong punched a two-out single through the right side and stole second. Ben Somorjai reached on a fielding error, setting the stage for pinch hitter Harrison Burns. With Burns batting, the Fords attempted a double steal, but were unsuccessful as Furlong was caught in a rundown between third and home to end the inning. The Bears added an insurance tally with a home run from Mumme during the eighth inning.

Drea began the ninth inning with a long fly out off the bat of Sohmer, who appeared to just miss a home run as the ball landed just short and left of the foul pole. Owen Plambeck singled with two out, but Matt Goss hit a sharp liner to first base, where Stanziale made a leaping catch to end the game.

Bass finished with just four hits allowed over his seven innings of work. He walked a pair and struck out a pair before giving way to Herring for the final two frames. Plambeck had two hits for the Fords. Stanziale had a game-high three hits for Ursinus.

Haverford will return to action tomorrow, as the squad heads to Franklin & Marshall for a doubleheader with the Diplomats. The first pitches are slated for 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in Lancaster, Pa.
