Baseball Grounded by Shoremen, 13-6

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College baseball team dropped a 13-6 decision to visiting Washington College at Kannerstein Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Fords were done in by two five-run frames for the Shoremen, including a five-run top of the first. Michael Schwarze paced Haverford offensively, going 2-4 with three RBI to his name on the afternoon.

Ben Somorjai and Harrison Burns each had multi-hit games as well. Aaron Barclay was a standout for Washington College, with a triple and a home run for five RBI. Haverford falls to 12-13 overall on the season (5-2 in Centennial Conference play) while Washington College is now 19-9 (3-4 CC).

The Fords sent Luke Duris (2-3) to the hill for the start on the heels of seven innings of two-hit ball on Thursday against Ursinus. In the top of the first inning, the Shoremen tagged the junior for five runs on three hits. Washington College scored on an error and a Matt Tancredi single before Luke D'Ostillio delivered a double to left center and Joe Lozupone added a two-RBI single for the 5-0 advantage.

Haverford added a run against Brian Kasey (4-1) in the bottom of the frame as Ethan Lee-Tyson roped a one-out double to left center and scored on a groundout from Owen Plambeck. The Fords tallied a run in the third on a sacrifice fly from Spencer Sohmer.

Washington College tacked on three runs in the fourth as Barclay's homer provided a cushion to make it 8-2 Shoremen.

In the bottom of the sixth, Haverford chased Kasey from the game as Sohmer was hit by a pitch and scored on Schwarze's double to right center. After Sam Partee walked, Somorjai singled ahead of the center fielder, cutting the lead to 8-4.

Washington College broke the game open in the seventh as D'Ostillio charged a two-run homer to right field off Nathan Vucovich and Barclay tripled later in the frame to plate a pair against Daniel Joffe. The Fords again plated a pair of runs in the seventh, with Schwarze connecting on his second double in as many innings to bring home a pair.

Duris finished with 3.1 innings pitched, settling down to strike out three in his abbreviated outing before Vucovich took over in relief, pitching 2.2 innings allowing two runs and striking out a pair. Tom Phillips, Brandon Jenkins and Austin Castellanos combined for the final 2.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit.

After reaching on a hit by pitch, Spencer Sohmer increased his reached base streak to 15 games, the longest for any Haverford player this season.

The Fords will return to action, concluding the home-and-home series with the Shoremen on Friday, April 13 at 3:30 p.m in Chestertown, Md. The Fords then return home to face Johns Hopkins for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14.  The first contest is slated to begin at 12:30 p.m. with the second to follow at approximately 3:30 p.m.
