HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College baseball (9-5) team continued its strong start to the season with a doubleheader sweep of Cabrini (9-6) on Saturday at Kannerstein Field. The Fords knocked four homers on the day to help support some stellar starting pitching in the pair of seven-inning triumphs.

Haverford 4, Cabrini 3

Haverford turned to sophomore hurler Riley Grohowski in the first of two with the Cavaliers. Grohowski (3-1), logged six innings of five-hit ball, allowing three runs and striking out eight. Grohowski struck out the side in the first inning to help set the tone, and Haverford supported the stellar turn on the mound with single runs in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings.

Kyle Beach led off the second inning with a solo homer into left field, the first blemish for Pat Toal (3-2). Grohowski ran into his first spot of trouble in the top of the third. Christian Strickland and Colton Narciso reached on consecutive doubles to plate a run, before Garrett Laraia gave the visitors an early 2-1 lead with an RBI groundout.

Beach was again involved in an RBI situation in the bottom of the frame, as Daniel Rosman and Jonny Flieder singled to begin the inning. Jack Wallis grounded into a double play, but Beach laced a two-out single into left field to plate Flieder, tying the score at 2-2.

Cabrini briefly pulled back into the lead in the fourth, as Ben Houghton and Jon Sepe reached via a walk and a wild pitch before Strickland singled up the middle to put the Cavs ahead 3-2. Haverford matched the run in the bottom of the frame. Zach Landry singled into center, and Pranav Rane walked, after the pair both moved into scoring position by way of the wild pitch, Harry Genth notched an RBI groundout to tie things at 3-3.

Haverford took the lead in the fifth, as Wallis singled into left field with one out and Beach was hit by a pitch ahead of a single from Zach Becker, plating Beach for the eventual winning-run.

The Fords were able to hang on to the lead as Grohowksi tossed a shutdown inning in the top of the sixth, working out a one-out pinch hit single from Ryan Dipper, while Wyatt Mattison got the ball to begin the seventh. Mattison made quick work of the top of the Cabrini order, striking out the side to send the Fords to the win.

Beach was the only hitter in the game with multiple hits, while four different Fords scored a run.

Haverford 5, Cabrini 0

In game two, Haverford was lifted to victory by a standout turn on the mound from senior Josh Fuller (1-0) along with three home runs that set the tone offensively.

Landry hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the third inning, giving Haverford a 1-0 lead. In the same inning, Genth also knocked a two-run home run to left field, bringing in Kendrick Curry II who had walked earlier, extending the Haverford lead to 3-0 in the early goings.

Cabrini tried to mount a comeback, but Fuller was on fire throughout the afternoon, striking out 11 Cavaliers batters and only allowing four hits and one walk over seven innings in a complete game shutout. The Cavaliers lineup struggled, as they never really looked comfortable standing in at the dish against the Haverford hurler who seemed to have everything working.  In the sixth inning, Haverford's Becker smacked a two-run home run to left field, with Beach on base after a walk, giving Haverford a comfortable 5-0 lead.

Cabrini tried to rally in the top of the seventh inning, with a Houghton single ahead of a walk and a wild pitch loading the bases. Fuller and Haverford's defense held strong, as Cabrini was unable to push a run across as Fuller logged a pair of emphatic strikeouts in his final frame before inducing a flyout off the bat of Narciso to end the threat.

Haverford had a strong offensive showing, with only four hits but three of those being  monumental home runs. Genth and Becker each had two RBI as well to help back the stellar turn from Fuller. Cabrini's Jordan Silvestri allowed five runs on four hits and four walks over six innings of work, striking out seven batters in a complete game effort for the visitors.

With another solid week in hand, Haverford now returns to action on Tuesday, heading to No. 11 Rowan for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch with the Profs in Glassboro.
