Jaffe leads trio of Fords in postseason field hockey honors

LANCASTER, Pa. – Sophomore Roxanne Jaffe of the Haverford College field hockey team was voted First-Team All-Centennial Conference as announced by the league office in a press release Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman teammate Mary Hobbs was one of only two newcomers to earn conference honors in 2009 as the forward earned Second-Team All-Centennial honors while junior midfielder Alex Waleko was voted conference Honorable Mention.

The trio of Fords earning postseason Centennial honors is the most ever by the field hockey program since the league began play with the 1993 season. Jaffe's top-rung honor is only the third Fords player to garner First-Team inclusion and the first since Haverford placed one player each on the conference squads in 1993 and 1994.

Helping to lead the 2009 team to their first Centennial playoff berth, Jaffe, a defender, was fifth on the team in scoring with 17 points from five goals and seven assists. She and her back line teammates limited opponents to 228 shots this season, a drop of more than 60 shots from the previous year.

On the front line, Hobbs led the Fords with 28 points which was sixth-most in the league. Her total of 10 goals was sixth in the Centennial as was her 1.47 points per game average.

Waleko finished the season second on the team with 24 points generated from eight goals and eight assists.

The 2009 Fords (9-10 overall, 6-4 Centennial) capped their regular season with a fourth place finish in the league standings, qualifying for the program's first conference playoff. They won their initial playoff game, a 1-0 quarterfinal thriller against Franklin & Marshall College under the lights at Swan Field, before falling in the semifinals to 3rd-ranked and eventual conference tournament champion Ursinus College.
