Late surge by Ducks sinks Fords in field hockey opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The win just wasn't in the cards for the Fords in their season opener on Tuesday afternoon at Swan Field as they fell to the No. 15 Ducks from the Stevens Institute of Technology who had to rally for a 3-2 victory.

Following a scoreless first half in which the Fords (0-1) out shot the Ducks (1-0) by a slim 5-4 margin, Haverford put the first digit up on the scoreboard early in the second stanza when Roxanne Jaffe converted a penalty shot in the game's 39th minute.

A little more than three minutes later teammate Alex Waleko made it 2-0 in favor of the home team with a shot from four yards away off a pass from Jaffe.

The ranked Ducks called a quick time-out and re-grouped, then began battling back with their first score of the season only five mintues after Waleko's tally. They added two more unanswered goals to push past the Fords on the scoreboard.

Now playing with the lead and with less than seven minutes remaining, the Stevens defense stiffened and held the Fords without out a shot the rest of the way to preserve the win.

Haverford had 13 shots and nine penalty corners in the game compared with only 12 and five, respectively, for the Ducks.

Fords goalie Maggie Cronin finished with four saves in taking the loss while Stevens' Ellyn Griggs earned the victory with five saves.

Haverford hits the road over the weekend to seek out their first win of the season as they travel to 10th-ranked Rowan (N.J.) University on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. game.
