Field Hockey's Waleko honored with Senior Game selection by NFHCA

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Senior Alex Waleko of the Haverford College field hockey team has been selected to the roster of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's (NFHCA) 2010 Division III Senior Game to be hosted Sunday, November 21 at 9 a.m. by Christopher Newport University in Newport News., Va.

Waleko, from East Hampton, N.Y., has put together a career-best year in 2010 registering season-highs in goals (17), assists (12) and points (46) while helping to lead the Fords to their second consecutive Centennial Conference postseason tournament.

Twice named the conference's offensive player of the week this fall (Sept. 27 and Oct. 11), her 46 points through 17 games — with the playoffs yet to come — is a single-season program record.

The midfielder's offensive outburst this year has also pushed her career totals to the top of the program's lists. With 100 points, Waleko becomes the first Haverford player to crack the century mark. She also tops the career charts in goals (38), assists (24) and game starts (72), taking the field at the beginning of the game for every Haverford contest during her four year career.

The iron-woman's selection to the prestigious senior game adds to the honors she has collected throughout her career which include all-conference awards (second team in 2008, honorable mention in 2009) and twice being named to the Centennial Academic Honor Roll (2008, 2009).

The Fords (13-4, 8-2 CC) will make only their second postseason league playoff appearance on the upcoming weekend, having earned their first trip last season. Third-seeded Haverford is slated to play second-seed Johns Hopkins (11-6, 8-2) in a semifinal match-up at approximately 2:40 p.m. Saturday, November 6 at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa. The championship game for the two semifinal winners is scheduled for Sunday, November 7 at 2 p.m. at the same site.
