Player of the year Waleko headlines quartet with all-conference honors

LANCASTER, Pa. – Haverford College senior Alex Waleko has been named the Centennial Conference's player of the year in field hockey as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.

Also announced were the all-conference teams. Waleko and Roxanne Jaffe were named first-team, Mary Hobbs earned a second-team selection and Bridget Gibbons was tabbed for honorable mention.  In the history of the program Haverford had previously accumulated just three first-team honors, nearly equaling that total with 2010's postseason honors.

Waleko becomes the first Ford to earn the conference player of the year award in field hockey. An attacker, she is the first Haverford player to crack the century mark in career points generating 102 from 39 goals and 24 assists over her four seasons. Each of her totals in the three categories set new team records.

One week ago Waleko was honored with selection to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's 2010 Division III Senior game that will be played November 21 in Newport News, Va. She was one of only two Centennial players chosen for the all-star tilt.

Jaffe, a junior earning first-team honors in consecutive years, helped lead a defensive group that allowed 44 goals for a 2.32 goals per game average over the season, marks that are the program's best since the 2002 season (39, 1.99).

Hobbs, a two-time second-team selection, led the conference with 14 assists and was third in points with a team-high 52. The sophomore set a new team record for points in a game during the year accumulating nine in a victory at Swarthmore, a contest in which she also tied a team mark for goals in a game with four.

Gibbons, a sophomore midfielder, accrued eight points and had a pair of defensive saves in the 2010 season.

The quartet of all-conference honorees were part of a team that set a new record for wins in a season, 14, and reached the conference tournament championship game for the first time in program history. The 2010 Fords broke season records for points (230), goals (89), assists (52) and shots per game (26.65).
