Fords rally at Hopkins but Blue Jays secure win with late tally

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Haverford College field hockey team rallied twice from deficits to Johns Hopkins University but the host Blue Jays sealed the 4-3 win with a late goal in Centennial Conference action Saturday night.

Haverford (6-3, 2-2 CC) fought back from an early 2-0 Hopkins lead with back-to-back goals in the final two minutes of the opening half from Margaret Selsor sending the teams into the intermission tied at two goals apiece.

Carly Bianco and Ariana Branchini gave the Blue Jays (5-4, 3-1 CC) a two-goal lead in the game's first 15 minutes but Selsor cut the deficit in half at the 33:05 mark off an assist from Alex Waleko. A last-second Selsor tip-in from a Juliana Morgan-Strostle shot evened the score as the opening 35 minutes came to a close.

The Blue Jays moved back in front early in the second half but one minute later Selsor hammered in her seventh of the season to pull the Fords even for a second time. Roxanne Jaffe's assist on the tying goal gave her 21 for her career and pulled the junior captain within one of program assist leader Robin Herlands.

It took twenty more minutes of back-and-fourth action before one team would finally break the tie and unfortunately for Haverford, Hopkins' Bianco notched her second of the game with the eventual game-winner in the 59th minute.

The Fords out shot the Blue Jays by a 30-18 margin but 15 of the host's 18 shots were on frame keeping Haverford goalie Maggie Cronin busy.

Cronin finished with 10 saves and got help from Bridget Gibbons who registered a defensive save. Hopkins' goalie, Kim Stein, stopped 12 Haverford shots and also got some help from a teammate with a defensive save.

The Fords, who drop into a three-way tie for fourth place in the league with Saturday's loss, will try to rebound in their next game, a Centennial contest Wednesday afternoon at Swan Field against visiting Bryn Mawr College (0-7, 0-4 CC).
