Big first half leads field hockey to win over visiting Bryn Mawr

HAVERFORD, Pa. – It took just 53 seconds for the Haverford College field hockey team to score what would eventually be the winning goal in its 11-0 Centennial Conference win over visiting Bryn Mawr College Wednesday afternoon at Swan Field.

Mary Hobbs gave Haverford (7-3, 3-2 CC) its lead in the opening minute banging home a cross by Molly Braun from the right of the Bryn Mawr (0-8, 0-5 CC) goal.

The Fords scored seven more times over the opening 35 minutes to take an 8-0 lead into the intermission.

During that barrage sophomore Bridget Gibbons scored her first of the season and freshman Megan Reilly chalked up her first collegiate goal.

Hobbs, a sophomore who put three notches on her belt against Muhlenberg two games prior, added two more on the day for her second career hat trick. Three other Fords had a multi-goal outing as Gibbons added a second, freshman Bryn Bissey notched a pair of goals, and senior Alex Waleko scored her team-leading 12th and 13th goals.

Juliana Morgan-Trostle scored the other Haverford goal as well as picking up an assist on Hobbs' second tally.

Waleko picked up two assists in the win, and Roxanne Jaffe's assist on Bissey's first marker Wednesday moved the junior captain into a tie atop the program's career assists list with 22.

The Fords' defense allowed just three Bryn Mawr shots during the contest with only the final attempt making it on frame.

Bryn Mawr was granted a penalty stroke with 17 seconds remaining but Sydney Hyder's diving block to her right on Manya Steinfeld's attempt preserved the shut out for Haverford.

Maggie Cronin started the game in goal for the Fords and played into the 21st minute to earn the win. Courtney Knill played the next 29 minutes and, like Cronin, didn't have to make a single save. Hyder closed out the game for the trio and registered that one, spectacular save on the only shot she faced.

The Fords piled up 17 shots in each half and a pair of Bryn Mawr goalies finished with five saves of the 16 shots that were on goal. Haverford also owned an 18-4 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.

The 11 goals scored by the Fords tied the team record for most in a game, set last season at Bryn Mawr. The victory over the Owls Wednesday was also the 14th straight win by the Fords in the series and the fourth consecutive shut out.

There is no rest for the weary as Haverford returns to action in less than 24 hours with a non-conference, Main Line battle Thursday afternoon at 8th-ranked Eastern University.
