Overtime goal by Morgan-Trostle sinks Shorewomen in battle at Swan

HAVERFORD, Pa. – It took seventy minutes of regulation and nearly the full 15 of the overtime period for the field hockey teams from Haverford College and Washington College to decide a winner, but the Fords got a score from Juliana Morgan-Trostle with five seconds remaining to pull out a 3-2 overtime victory in Centennial Conference action Wednesday night.

Morgan-Trostle, who scored all of Haverford's goals, tipped in a blast from Bridget Gibbons that had first been tipped by a Washington defender, beating the buzzer with five seconds remaining in the overtime period.

The Fords (10-4, 5-2 CC) struck first early in the game when Morgan-Trostle notched an unassisted tally in the eighth minute. The lead lasted a liitle more than 20 minutes until Danielle Rosato evened things up for Washington (6-8, 4-3 CC) at the 28:04 mark.

Second half play began as the first half ended, with both teams getting penetration into the circle but coming away with nothing to show for their efforts.

Slowly, though, the Haverford attack began to tilt momentum toward the Washington defensive end getting numerous cracks at breaking the tie only to be thwarted by the Shorewomen defense.

It was the visitors who finally broke through, however, with a rush upfield and a score at 60:04 that gave them their first lead of the contest.

Twenty-two seconds later Morgan-Trostle found the equalizer for the home team banging in her second goal, this time off a pass from Mary Hobbs.

The game looked like it might turn in the 64th minute when Rosato was awarded a penalty stroke, but the senior missed wide then made matters worse by earning a yellow card two minutes later putting her team down a player for the remainder of regulation time.

The Fords couldn't take advantage of their man-up opportunity resulting in the team's first extra period of the season.

Perhaps the early man-advantage -- for the overtime's initial 36 seconds -- set the tone for the Fords, or maybe the wide-open space of playing seven-on-seven, but either way Haverford owned possession in extra time.

The Fords, who had accumulated seven penalty corner opportunities in each of the two halves of regulation play, registered 14 chances in the 15-minute overtime.

Still, though, Washington stood its ground and made things look like a second overtime would be needed until the Shorewomen got a breakaway with the clock winding toward double-zeroes.

The Fords caused a turnover and raced back into the Washington end where Gibbons got off a long shot from outside the circle hoping for a tip-in by a teammate.

Somewhere between Gibbons and the goal a Washington player nicked the ball but not enough to alter its trajectory toward Morgan-Trostle who deflected the ball past Shorewomen goalie Shannon Davis to end the battle with five seconds showing on the clock.

Davis played a tremendous game in goal for the visitors stopping 18 shots and getting help from teammate Brittany Palasik who finished with four defensive saves, two coming in overtime.

Haverford's Maggie Cronin had six saves in goal and also received some help as Sarah Crist picked up her team-leading fourth defensive save.

The Fords out shot Washington by a 36-17 margin including a 17-0 edge in overtime.

The victory gave Haverford its 10th win of the season, the first double-digit wins total since an 11-3-2 finish in 1991. The Fords also remained in at least a tie for third place in the league standings while Washington falls a game behind.

Next up for Haverford is a trip to Dickinson College Saturday afternoon for a noon-time league contest against the Red Devils (3-11, 2-5 CC).
