Field hockey blanks Dickinson to end Red Devils' win streak

CARLISLE, Pa. – Alex Waleko scored twice for the Haverford College field hockey team in a 3-0 win by the Fords over host Dickinson College Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action, ending a 10-game slide to the Red Devils.

The Red Devils (3-12, 2-6 CC) last fell to the Fords (11-4, 6-2 CC) in 1999 when visiting Haverford scratched out a 1-0 victory. Saturday's win allows Haverford to maintain its third place ranking within the league standings.

Waleko opened the scoring in the eighth minute during an early flurry from the Fords who took the first eight shots of the game. Juliana Morgan-Trostle put the Fords up by two within that barrage, notching her 14th of the year, getting a shot past Dickinson goalie Ioni Kokdis five minutes after Waleko's marker.

The lead grew to three 10 minutes into second half play when Waleko added a another tally pushing her season total to a career best 17.

The Fords out shot the Red Devils by a 28-5 margin and held a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal, and a 12-3 edge in penalty corner opportunities.

Maggie Cronin started in goal for the Fords stopping both shots she faced over the initial 51 minutes of action, then gave way to Sydney Hyder who finished the game between the pipes and registered one save to complete the shut out. Dickinson's Kokdis ended with six saves in the loss.

With just a pair of conference games remaining, Saturday's win clinches a postseason conference playoff spot for the Fords who can finish no worse than fifth in the league standings.

Haverford takes to the road for its next outing heading to rival Swarthmore for a Wednesday afternoon contest, then returns home to Swan Field for the season-closer against McDaniel next Saturday at Noon.
