Field hockey boots Mules with shut out victory on the road

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - A hat trick from sophomore Mary Hobbs helped lead the Haverford College field hockey team to an 8-0 Centennial Conference victory Wednesday night over host Muhlenberg College at Scotty Wood Stadium.

Hobbs scored the opening goal for Haverford (6-2, 2-1 CC) at the 3-minute mark of the first half with an assist on a penalty corner from Alex Waleko. Hobbs' second tally came shortly before halftime and she picked up her third marker with the contest's final goal in the 61st minute.

The Fords out shot Muhlenberg (0-8, 0-2 CC) by a 28-6 margin and owned a 17-4 advantage in shots on goal.

The quick score from Hobbs put the Fords in an attacking mode as they banged away at Mules goalie Kristen Dornenburg.

Margaret Selsor made it 2-0 nearing the 10-minute mark and three minutes later Juliana Morgan-Trostle upped the margin to three.

Molly Braun followed with her first of the season, then Alyssa Mayo notched her first collegiate goal to put the Fords in front by five before Hobbs would finish off the barrage and make it 6-0 as the teams entered the intermission.

Mayo's second and Hobbs' third tally were the only goals of the second half.

Maggie Cronin picked up the win in goal for Haverford making the save on the only shot she faced over the first 35 minutes. Sydney Hyder came on in relief to start the second stanza and made three saves to preserve the shut out.

Muhlenberg's Dornenburg finished with nine saves and was assisted by a pair of defensive saves from her teammates.

The dominating win Wednesday night by the Fords was in stark contrast to the 2009 battle -- a 2-1 Muhlenberg victory under the lights at Haverford -- which wasn't decided until a Mules goal with 57 seconds left in regulation.

Haverford will take to the road for its next outing, a 5:30 p.m. league contest this Saturday in Baltimore, Md., against Johns Hopkins University.
