Heartbreak in Baltimore for Fords

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Haverford College field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to host Johns Hopkins University Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

The Fords (6-6, 3-3 CC) scored their lone goal late in the game to trim the Hopkins (6-7, 3-3) lead in half, but had nearly knotted things up in early second-half action when the Blue Jays' lead was just one.

Coming out of the hafltime break, Hopkins clung to a 1-0 lead. The Fords swarmed around Blue Jays goalie Kim Stein in the early minutes of the second stanza, mounting an effort that nearly tied the game.

Mary Hobbs' shot at the 40:51 mark was saved by Stein but the Fords' Bryn Bissey nabbed the rebound and got off a shot that Stein wasn't able to reach. Her teammate, Ali Bahneman, however, stepped in behind Stein and cleared away Bissey's attempt to preserve the slim margin.

The Blue Jays added a back-breaking goal in the 64th minute to stretch the lead to two before Bissey tallied her sixth of the year with less than a minute remaining to provide the final numbers on the scoreboard.

Haverford goalie Sydney Hyder played another solid game in net for the Fords registering 11 saves for her fourth double-digit saves total on the year. Stein finished with 14 saves in the game to earn the win for Hopkins.

The Fords will try to get back on the winning track Wednesday when Bryn Mawr College visits Swan Field for a 4:30 p.m. conference match-up.
