Jaffe, Selsor, Hobbs team up to lead offense in late rally over Shorewomen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Roxanne Jaffe blasted home the game-winner 10 minutes after Margaret Selsor had pulled the Haverford College field hockey team even in the Fords' 2-1 victory Wednesday afternoon over host Washington College in a pivotal Centennial Conference match-up.

Haverford, 9-7 overall, pulls into a three-way tie for fifth place in the league standings with a 5-4 conference mark following the victory. With the loss, Washington, also at 9-7 and 5-4, joins the Fords and Swarthmore College in a tie for the fifth, and final, conference tournament spot.

Jaffe's game-winner came in the 64th minute as the senior and Mary Hobbs played give-and-go after a penalty corner opportunity. The goal was the fifth of the season for Jaffe and Hobbs' assist was her second of the game.

Selsor's equalizer came at the 52-minute mark as she tipped home a shot taken by Hobbs after Hobbs had gathered the rebound from teammate Bryn Bissey's shot which had been saved, but not controlled, by Washington goalkeeper Stephanie Harryman.

The Shorewomen nabbed the early lead on a goal by Emily Trees in the 18th minute. Similar to Selsor's marker, Trees coralled a loose ball after Haverford net minder Sydney Hyder stopped Claire McAuliffe's shot.

Washington owned a lead and momentum entering the halftime break, having out shot the Fords by a 10-7 margin and running up an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Second-half action turned Haverford's way, though, as the Fords got seven of their nine shots on goal while limiting the Shorewomen to just two shots that got all the way into Hyder.

The regular season concludes Saturday on Senior Day for the Fords who will welcome Swarthmore to Swan Field for a noontime game that could determine which team continues its season and which one begins preparations for 2012 a little earlier than desired.
