HAVERFORD, Pa. - Seniors Mary Hobbs and Bridget Gibbons each scored a pair of goals Saturday afternoon to help lead Haverford College's 16th-ranked field hockey team past visiting McDaniel College, 5-2, in a Centennial Conference contest under a bright, fall sky at Swan Field.

Hobbs and Gibbons netted the first two goals of the day to stake the Fords (11-4, 6-2 Centennial) to a 2-0 lead over the Green Terror (8-7, 3-5) within the opening 16 minutes of first-half play.

Hobbs added her second of the day at the 16:52 mark to increase the lead to three before McDaniel's Jayde Kauffman was able to halt the string of unanswered goals with a marker near the end of the 25th minute.

The 3-1 halftime lead increased by one in the early minutes of the second half with Gibbons' second of the day but a Haverford defender deflected a ball into the Fords' goal at 44:27 to cut the margin to two. Catherine Aronowitz slammed home a perfect cross from Sarah Waldis in the right corner in the 58th, though, to push the Haverford advantage to three, where it finished.

Sydney Hyder (10-4) had a quiet day in goal turning away a pair of shots while surrendering Kauffman's tally and the own goal. Vicci Alexander (4-2) took the loss for McDaniel giving up all five goals and finishing with three saves.

The Fords maintained an edge in possession throughout most of the game, accumulating 26 shots and 15 penalty corner chances compared to 16 and nine, respectively, for the Green Terror.

Saturday's victory, coupled with Washington College's loss to No. 6 Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., helps Haverford within the league standings as the Fords slip one game in front of the Shorewomen who entered the day tied for second in the standings with Haverford and Gettysburg College which plays a Saturday night game against 4-4 Muhlenberg College.

The Fords take on the Shorewomen in their next game Wednesday night at Swan Field, a 7 p.m. contest which will also be Senior Night for Hobbs, Gibbons and five other seniors on the squad.
