Field Hockey Goes Down at Johns Hopkins, 1-0

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Haverford College field hockey team suffered its second straight 1-0 loss, falling to the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays at the Homewood Field on Friday night.

The Blue Jays tallied their only goal on a penalty stroke by Kiana Duncan in the 12th minute. Haverford did all it could to get one by Hopkins goaltender Zoey Atabek, but went into halftime scoreless. The visitors outshot Hopkins 7-4 and had more penalty corners (7-4) in the first half.

Haverford had its best chance to score in the first half towards the end of the stanza. In the 33rd minute, junior Brenna Boehman found junior Allison Martin, who had her shot blocked. Off the rebound, junior Sydney Cone found senior Catherine Aronowitz along the left side, but the senior's shot was deflected wide.

Head coach Jackie Cox's team maintained its offensive tempo in the second stanza. Aronowitz tried to tie the score as the second half began as she went streaking along the sideline, but the Hopkins defender deflected the ball away before she could get a shot off. The Fords had five shots on goal and eight penalty corners in the second half. They had four consecutive penalty corners between the 53rd and 57th minute, but only could muster two shots on goal that were sent away by Atabek. Freshman Elena Veale's shot looked like a potential goal, but it was deflected wide.

Senior Jen DiMaria had a game-high five shots on goal, while Boehman and Aronowitz registered three shots. Sophomore Natalie Leslie tallied a defensive save and junior goalkeeper Lindsey Lopes had four saves in the loss. Haverford finished with 12 shots and 15 penalty corners in the game compared to six shots and eight penalty corners for Johns Hopkins. Atabek made 12 saves in the shutout victory for the Blue Jays.

The Fords fell to 5-8 on the season and 1-5 in the Centennial Conference while Johns Hopkins improved to 6-7 and 3-3 in the conference. The field hockey team will head to Bryn Mawr on Wednesday. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
