HAVERFORD, Pa. – On Senior Day at Swan Field, the Haverford College field hockey team powered past Hood Trophy rival Swarthmore by a final score of 3-0, clinching a third consecutive berth in the Centennial Conference Tournament and securing a first-round matchup at Washington College on Tuesday, October 31. The start time for the contest is still to be announced.
The Fords received a pair of goals from Mason McNulty, as well as a strike from Stephanie Terrell to turn back the Garnet. Danielle Rette recorded her sixth shutout of the season to pick up the win in goal. The Fords improve to 10-7 overall on the season (5-5 CC) while the Garnet finish at 7-10 overall (2-8 CC).
The Fords opened up the scoring just seven minutes into the contest, with McNulty taking a cross from Rachel Gordon and depositing her seventh goal of the season into the left corner of the cage, past Swarthmore goalkeeper Zelda Bank.
The Fords added to the advantage with a 23rd minute tally off the stick of Terrell, who was playing her final regular season home game at Swan Field. Terrell fired a shot into the pads of Bank, and the rebound found her stick. Attempting to cross to a teammate, she shot high and found the back of the cage for a 2-0 lead.
Early in the second half, the Fords scored their third of the contest as Terrell fed McNulty with a sharp pass into the circle. McNulty was able to one time the assist into the back of the cage, finishing towards the far post for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The Fords dominated possession, holding a 21-5 advantage in shots and an 11-5 mark in penalty corners on the afternoon. Rette was called upon to make three saves. Bank made 11 saves for the visiting Garnet.
Prior to the contest, the Fords honored the senior class of Paige Carson, Jolie Brakey, Elena Veale, Malin Ehrsam, Terrell, Alexandra Fascione-Hutchins and Rette. The senior class has combined for 39 total wins, three berths in the Centennial Conference playoffs and 3 NFHCA National Academic Team Awards to date.
The win for Haverford was the 12th straight triumph over Swarthmore, dating back to the 2006 season. Haverford will finish the season with at least 10 wins for the third consecutive year and the seventh time in the last eight seasons under head coach Jackie Cox.
The Centennial Conference Tournament will open with the first round game in Chestertown, Md. The matchup is tentatively slated for Tuesday, October 31 between the Fords and the Shorewomen of Washington College.
The winner of the contest will advance to the Centennial Conference semifinals against Johns Hopkins. The matchup will take place in Baltimore, Md. on Friday, November 3. Game times and details for all Centennial Conference playoff action will be announced on Monday.
