Men's fencing falls to New England rivals

WALTHAM, Mass. – After a brief stint atop the NCAA Division III fencing heap, the previously unbeaten Haverford College men's fencing team was swept by its New England foes Saturday at Brandeis University's Gosman Sports Arena for the first time since 2008. With a shortened line-up the Fords were unable to repeat last year's domination of Brown, Brandeis, MIT and Boston College, losing close matches to each. The Fords also got bit by the Bulldogs of Yale, falling by a score of 19-8.

The Haverford epee squad, despite being without a key player, led the way on the day winning all of their squad matches except against MIT. "Co-Captain Dan Drebing really stepped it up, coming off the bench and posting six wins," said head coach Chris Spencer. The epee squad prevented a total rout by Ivy-powerhouse Yale as the foil and sabre squads were almost blanked by the Bulldogs. The epeeists pulled off the upset, 6-3. "We survived the day with some dignity intact thanks to the epeeists," added Spencer.

Top scorers on the day, epeeists Andrew Bostick at 10-5 and Remy Olson at 9-6, were helped out by foilist Ben Van Son and Sabrist Oliver Elbert, who both posted eight wins.
