Fencers complete sweeps Sunday at Johns Hopkins Invitational

BALTIMORE – Both the men's and women's fencers of Haverford College completed undefeated days Sunday at the Johns Hopkins Invitational, coming away with perfect 4-0 marks from the day's competitions.

Each team's sweep included a win over regional rival Johns Hopkins. For the men, the victory was the third consecutive win in head-to-head match-ups with the Blue Jays. The women took down Hopkins for the first time since February of 2009 when the Fords garnered their first Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) championship with a narrow victory over the Blue Jays in the final round of action.

Haverford also posted wins Sunday over Maryland, Virginia Tech, Lafayette (men) and City College of New York (women).

The top scorers for the women included co-captain Amanda Levinson, who finished with a perfect 12-0 record in the foil, and freshman epeeist Anjali Baliga, who was undefeated with an 11-0 mark. Another freshman, Sara Sofia, continued to show improvement in her first season with the Fords compiling a 9-2 record on the day. Sabrists Shannon Horn, a freshman, and Francesca Behling, a sophomore, each picked up eight wins to help the Haverford women complete their sweep.

Sabrist Oliver Elbert was the foundation for the men's success, posting a 7-1 record including a slim victory over arch-rival Max Weider of Johns Hopkins, while sophomore Linus Marco continued to show potential for coach Chris Spencer with a 6-6 mark in the sabre. Foil starters Andy Moore, Andrew Soule-Hinds and Sam Levinson combined for a 13-2 record, and junior epeeist Andrew Bostick led his weapon squad at 8-2.
