Men's fencing posts 4-1 record at Haverford Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's fencing team posted a 4-1 record against strong competition at the Haverford Invitational held at Alumni Field House on Saturday.

The men defeated Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) rivals William & Mary, University of Virginia, University of Maryland-College Park and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), but fell to Johns Hopkins University for the first time in three years.

Epeeist James Nieuwland and foilist Max Findley each won 12 bouts while dropping only two apiece, to pace the Fords on the day. Although Haverford lost to Johns Hopkins overall, a bright spot was in the sabre squad's 5-4 win over the Blue Jays' tough lineup.

Despite suffering a narrow loss 5-4 to Johns Hopkins, the foilists, led by Findley and Sam Levinson (9-1 on the day), topped the squad records with 8-1 wins over William & Mary, Virginia and Maryland, and a 7-2 conquest against NJIT. Epeeist Kailash Faris led all freshmen with a 5-2 record.

The Haverford men's and women's fencing teams will next compete Saturday, Dec. 8 at 11 a.m., when they host local rivals Swarthmore College, Bryn Mawr College and Drexel University in the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center.
