Fords take down NJIT, Drew at Philly Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - The Haverford College men's fencing team competed Saturday at the annual Philadelphia Invitational, held at Temple University's Student Pavillion.

The Fords had an opportunity to go up against several of the top Division I teams in the region for the second time this season, as they attempted to improve their seeding into the NCAA Regionals.

The first match of the day was another matchup against Johns Hopkins University, who had bested the Fords at Haverford earlier in the season, 17-10. A slight improvement in the score (this time the Fords lost 16-11) belied the improvement in the team's performance, as many
matches were very close, and Haverford feels that Johns Hopkins is not out of reach at the MACFA conference championships.

Other rematches on the day were against University of Pennsylvania, Sacred Heart University, and the University of North Carolina (UNC), against whom the Fords improved or matched their scores from encounters earlier in the season in the losses. Sophomore Max Findley was undefeated against a strong UPenn foil squad, leading the Fords to top the Quakers in foil for the first time in program history. Team wins Saturday came against New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and Drew, both Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) rivals of the Fords.

Team leaders on the day were Findley in the foil, with a 12-5 record; James Nieuwland in the epee, at 11-6; and Aaron Ruby with an 8-8 record in the sabre. Sophomore epeeist Warren Schwartz showed tremendous fortitude and skill as he downed 2-of-3 UNC foes, to keep the hopes alive for the Fords until the last round of that competition. Also showing some impressive improvement was French, freshman foilist Baptiste Teyssier, who was 10-8 on the day; Teyssier downed defending MACFA foil champ, James Weiss of Drew, 5-2 during team play.

Haverford returns to action on Sunday at the Sollee Invitational hosted by the Massachusetts Insitute of Technology.
