Undefeated foil squad leads Fords at MACFA tournament

MADISON, N.J. - The Haverford College men's fencing team won four of five matches this Sunday at Drew University in Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) action.

The Fords registered wins against The College of William & Mary, Navy, University of Maryland and University of Virginia. Haverford's lone loss of the conference tournament was to Johns Hopkins University.

The foil squad was undefeated in match play on the day, led by co-captain Max Findley's perfect 15-0 record, while sophomore Baptiste Teyssier contributed 12 wins. The Fords' foilists defeated the Johns Hopkins squad for the first time in three years with a 5-4 victory while the epee squad also picked up the win, 6-3. Eric Gardner led the epeeists with 12 wins over the course of the tournament, followed closely by squadmate Jake Bassinder at 11-3.

The sabrists spread the burden of bouts around more evenly, led by Josh Nadel's 4-5 performance, with freshmen Ben Cattau and Ching Li, who came off the bench against all opponents except Johns Hopkins, posting winning 5-2 and 4-2 records, respectively.

The Haverford men's fencers will next send their foil squad to compete at the Unite States Collegiate Squad Championships, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, on February 23.
