Men's foilists compete at squad championships

PHILADELPHIA – The Haverford College men's foil squad competed in the Fourth Annual United States Collegiate Squad Championships for fencing at the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday.

The Fords' foilists opened against top-seeded University of Pennsylvania, and having defeated Penn 5-4 earlier in the season, Haverford's hopes were high for an upset. Those hopes were dashed however by the fifth round. In the first round, senior Lawrence Wang fell 5-1 to Penn's Jason Chang, but then the Fords' Max Findley almost evened things up with a 7-4 tear that brought the score to 8-9. The host Quakers ran away with it, however, from then on and triumphed 45-15.

The Fords faced off in the placement round against New York University (NYU), with Wang opening with a strong win over the Violets' Christian Vastola. NYU maintained a tenuous lead until Aldis Gamble almost pulled it even in the seventh with a 10-4 run that made the score 33-34, but the Violets stood strong and won 45-39. The Fords next compete at the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) championships on Sunday at West Point.
