POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Fencing in their first dual-meet competition of the season, the Haverford College men's fencing team went an even 4-4 at this past Sunday's Vassar Invitational. Losses to Sacred Heart, Cornell, Vassar and Stevens Tech were balanced out by wins over Denison, Yeshiva, Lafayette and Hunter, in an eight-round slogfest that tested their endurance and mental strength.

Leading the foil squad, and all Fords overall, was first-year phenom Jax Wittenberg, who posted a 16-6 record, including four wins over A-rated opponents. Wittenberg was closely paced by sophomore sabrist Lucas Winkler, at 14-4, representing the Fords in team competition for the first time. Seniors Carter Langen (foil) and Nicholas Conroy (sabre) passed the .500 mark, at 10-9 and 9-8 respectively; and a pair of epeeists almost did so as well, with Vivek Veluvali posting a mark of 9-12, and sophomore Danny Carvalho notching an 8-9 mark. First-years Jack Greff (sabre, 1-2) and Kenneth Hsu (foil, 2-4) each had wins in their first collegiate action.

Both the men's and women's teams will next compete this coming Saturday, when they host the D'Arnstein '09 Invitational in Alumni Fieldhouse.  The tournament will begin at 10 a.m. and includes MACFA rivals Johns Hopkins, Navy, William and Mary, and Maryland.
