BALTIMORE - On Sunday, February 6, the Haverford College men's fencing team traveled to Johns Hopkins to participate in the second of three MACFA (Mid Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association) tournaments, taking on Rowan, Rutgers, Lafayette, Drew and Cornell. The Fords showed their improvement over the season with wins over Lafayette and Cornell, to whom they had dropped matches earlier in the year, and with a solid win over Rowan. Haverford took close losses to Rutgers and Drew. The Fords demonstrated that they are still very much in the hunt for Conference medals at the end of the season.

The sabre squad anchored the team's performance, defeating all opponent squads on the day. With Lucas Winkler going 10-1, and Nicholas Conroy at 9-2, the Fords fairly dominated the competition; Winkler pulled off back-to-back 5-4 high-pressure wins against both Drew and Cornell to seal the defeat of those foes.

Carter Langen led the foil squad with a 7-2 record, with both losses being 4-5. Langen and fellow foilist Jax Wittenberg managed wins against all opponents except for Rutgers, including wins against Lafayette foilists who had previously defeated them.  The epee squad shouldered the load more evenly, with three fencers, Seun Eisape, Jacob Fink and Vivek Veluvali, having five or more wins, and with wily vets Edward Shin and Danny Carvalho stepping in where necessary to seal the wins.

The Haverford men will fence their third MACFA tournament next Sunday, February 13th, at Stevens in Hoboken, N.J. Action on the Canavan Arena strips is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
