BALTIMORE - On Sunday, the Haverford College men's fencing team travelled to Johns Hopkins to participate in the second of three Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) conference tournaments. The Fords took care of business and defeated Rowan, Lafayette, and Rutgers, but came up just short against Drew and Cornell.

In the first round, Haverford was able to dominate against Rowan, going undefeated in both epee and foil, and dominating in the sabre as well, for a 25-2 drubbing that started off the competition right. The Fords were able to ride that momentum into the next round against rival Lafayette, besting the Leopards 18-9, the same score as the last meeting between the two teams at the Philadelphia Invitational last month.

Whatever the Fords had for lunch, it was too much, because they didn't stay hungry, dropping a winnable match to Drew, 16-11, in the third round. The Rangers were the only Division III team this season to defeat all three weapon squads, even the Fords' vaunted foil squad, setting up a rematch at the Conference Championships next month that Haverford plans to win.

After taking care of Rutgers 17-10 in the fourth round, the Fords dropped another close one, this time to Cornell, losing 15-12. Without starters Daniel Carvalho or Henry Fedonchik in the lineup, two aces whose presence made the difference when Haverford defeated Cornell back in November at the Vassar Invitational, this time the Big Red were triumphant.

Haverford men's fencing will next travel to Stevens for the third and final MACFA regular season tournament, competing on Sunday Feb 18th in Hoboken against Army, Navy, Hunter, William and Mary, Yeshiva, and NJIT, as well as the host Ducks.
