Fencing Competes at NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships, Pyo and Strayer Named All-Region

MADISON, N.J. - The Haverford College men's and women's fencing teams concluded their seasons this past Saturday at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships, hosted at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.

Two Haverford men's foil fencers, Michael Pyo and Andrew Strayer, earned spots on the USFCA All-Region Team for their outstanding performances. Pyo claimed the 24th position, while Strayer followed closely in 26th place out of a field of 42 competitors, predominantly from Division I schools. Their placements were only bested by Alan Zheng of Johns Hopkins and Michael DeSando of Drew. Teammates Henry Fedonchik and Henry Bishop secured the 37th and 40th spots, respectively.

Pyo, benefiting from a first-round bye, entered the second round pool and secured a victory against UNC's Alexander Sichitiu. Meanwhile, Strayer fought hard in the first round, tallying a 3-3 record, and continued his success in the second round with a win against another UNC fencer, Nick Baumstein. The competition comprised four rounds, culminating in a final pool of 12 fencers to determine Nationals qualifiers, ultimately won by Blake Broszus of Penn.

In the epee category, Haverford's Danny Carvalho and Eric Chen mirrored Strayer's performance in the first round, each notching three victories. However, only Chen advanced to the second round, where he secured another win against UNC's Braydon Gyure, ultimately finishing tied for 27th. Carvalho, unfortunately, was edged out based on indicators and finished tied for 33rd, while Kenji Gullo placed 48th out of 53 epeeists. The event was won by Princeton's Tristan Szapary.

Prem Bhatt represented Haverford in sabre, clinching a win in the first round and finishing 37th, while Deep Patel placed 40th. The sabre Regional was won by Neil Lilov of Penn State.

On the women's side, Sophie Gardiner showcased a strong performance in foil with three wins in her first-round pool. Despite her efforts, she narrowly missed advancement to the second round based on indicators, securing the 33rd spot. Duke's Charlotte Koenig claimed victory in the women's foil Regional.

In epee, Nina Hamilton and Nina Chafee represented Haverford, with Hamilton securing wins against fencers from Lafayette and Drew in the first round, landing her in 32nd place. Chafee, proficient in both epee and foil, finished 40th. The epee Regional was won by Jessica Lin of Princeton.

Rebecca Osbaldeston represented Haverford in sabre, securing a win in the first round against a Drew fencer and finishing 38th. The sabre Regional was won by Ryan Jenkins of Princeton.

NCAA Division I Nationals are scheduled to be held at Ohio State from March 21 to 24.
