Men’s Lacrosse Claims Man-Down Defense Efficiency Statistical Championship

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's lacrosse team has been awarded the NCAA Division III statistical championship for the best man-down defense during the 2011 season.

Under second year head coach Colin Bathory, the Fords successfully killed off 89.3 percent (50-of-56) of their man-down situations. The six goals allowed were the fewest in D-III. Haverford improved its man-down defense from a season ago when it was successful on 73.2 percent (60-of-82) of its chances.

United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Third Team All-American goalie Joe Banno was the Fords' defensive leader, finishing fourth in D-III with a save percentage of .650. All-Centennial Conference second team selections Scott Kelley and Dillon Hamill along with all-Centennial honorable mention pick David Whitcomb were important cogs along the Haverford backline.

This is the men's lacrosse team's fifth NCAA statistical championship. In 1986 and 1995, the Fords led D-III in saves and saves per game.

In 2011, Haverford went 11-4 and qualified for the Centennial Conference tournament.
