Men’s lacrosse quartet garners USILA All-America recognition

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Four Haverford College men's lacrosse players were named to the 2011 United States Intercollegiate Coaching Association (USILA) Division III All-America Team Tuesday afternoon.

Junior goalie Joe Banno was named to the third team. He is the second Ford to be selected as a third-team all-American—teammate Max Hjelm was the first. Hjelm, a senior attacker, senior midfielder Travis Gregory and junior midfielder Dillon Hamill were tabbed for honorable mention. This is the first time that Haverford received four All-America nods. The Fords had three All-Americans on three different occasions.

In addition to their on-field accolades, Hjelm and Gregory were named 2011 USILA Scholar All-Americans on Tuesday.

Banno is an all-American for the first time. An All-Centennial Conference first team selection, Banno was third in Division III with a .650 save percentage.  He anchored D-III's best man-down defense. The Fords successfully killed off 89.3 percent of their man-down situations. Banno was the Centennial's leader in saves per game (13.47) and save percentage. He was fourth in the conference in goals against average (7.24).

Hjelm has earned the title all-American for the third consecutive year. He was a third team selection in 2010 and an honorable mention pick in 2009. A three-time All-Centennial Conference first team member, Hjelm led the Fords in 2011 with 24 goals, including a conference-high six game-winners, and 34 points. He ranked ninth in the conference in goals per game (1.6) and 10th in points per game (2.27). A two-time All-America honorable mention selection, Gregory was the team leader in assists (19).

An all-conference first team pick, Gregory also ranked third on the Fords in points (31). He was fourth in the conference in assists.

Hamill was named to the all-America team for the first time. He was tabbed for the all-Centennial second team. He led the team with 61 ground balls and 47 caused turnovers.

To be named to the USILA Scholar All-America Team—which includes Divisions I, II and III— the player must be a senior and have been nominated for the all-America team. Hjelm and Gregory are two of 30 Division III players to make the all-division team. They also account for two of the three Centennial Conference players to make the squad, Gettysburg's John Odierna was the other.
