Fords fall to #7 Mustangs in season opener

STEVENSON, Md. - Haverford College's men's lacrosse team traveled to Stevenson University on Saturday night looking to make an early-season national statement by taking down the seventh-ranked Mustangs. Despite two-goal games from both Christian Clay and Zack Cohen, the No. 17 Fords opened the season with an 11-5 non-conference loss.

Haverford (0-1) got off to a good start as Clay, courtesy of an assist from Cohen, opened the scoring 9:28 into the first. Stevenson (1-0) reeled off four straight, though, to take a 4-1 lead into halftime.

The Fords responded quickly in the third when Cohen took advantage of a man-up situation with 13:53 on the clock to pull Haverford within two, 4-2. Clay and Cohen would each tally again in the period but Stevenson exploded for five of its own to open a 9-4 advantage heading into the fourth.

Haverford tightened up the defense in the last period, holding the Mustangs to just two goals, but only Scott Chanelli could find the back of the cage as Stevenson secured the 11-5 victory.

Senior goalie Joe Banno finished with 17 saves for the Fords on 48 Stevenson shots while the Mustangs' Ian Bolland  made nine saves on 30 shots by the Haverford attack. Stevenson's defense had a strong showing forcing 18 Fords turnovers, while Haverford was only able to force 11 with Dillon Hamill causing four.

The Fords continue their challenging early-season non-conference schedule when they host Cabrini College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
