Main Line battle doesn't go Fords' way

HAVERFORD, Pa. – In a Main Line non-conference men's lacrosse match-up Saturday afternoon at Swan Field, Haverford College wasn't able to find the scoring touch in a 9-3 loss to visiting Cabrini College.

Haverford (0-2) out shot the Cavaliers (1-0) by a 31-28 margin but the Fords were able to convert only 1-of-4 extra-man opportunities while Cabrini notched three scores on five man-up attempts.

Cabrini broke out to a 3-0 advantage but defenseman Dillon Hamill cut into the lead early in the second period with a long run down the middle of the field that finished with his first goal of the season. The Cavaliers responded with a pair of goals later in the period to take a 5-1 lead into halftime.

The Fords' Zack Cohen opened scoring in the third period with a wrap-around goal for his third tally of the year. Cohen came around the right of Cabrini goalie Erick Zarzecki and used his own body as a screen, getting off a one-handed shot across his body while partially facing away from the goal. Zarzecki saw the shot too late which brought Haverford to within three.

The Fords were unable to get closer, though, getting only one more goal -- a rocket shot from Phillip Valliant from just inside the restraining line -- in early fourth-period action.

Hamill and Jordan Hitchcock registered three caused turnovers apiece to help goalie Joe Banno in the Fords' defensive efforts. Banno finished with seven saves in the loss while Zarzecki picked up 12 for the victors.

Haverford will try to pick up its first win of the season next Saturday afternoon when it takes on St. Lawrence University in a neutral-site contest at Bronxsville High School in Bronxsville, N.Y.
