Cohen's three goals not enough for Fords against #15 Denison

Cohen's three goals not enough for Fords against #15 Denison

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Haverford College challenged the 15th-ranked Big Red of Denison University, but the Fords lost an 11-7 non-conference battle Saturday afternoon on Kelleher Field at the St. Stephen's School.

The Fords (1-4) held the Big Red (4-0) to seven goals below their season scoring average while scoring three more goals than Denison had allowed on average.

Trailing 7-3 early in the third period, Haverford reeled off three straight goals -- including two from Zack Cohen -- to pull within one marker.

Cohen's first goal of the string, at the 7:32 mark in the third, ended a four-goal Denison run. Less than two minutes later Cohen was able to notch his second of the game to make the score 7-5, and Geoff Geppert finished the Haverford run with a score three minutes later.

Denison, however, closed out the third with two goals then added two more early fourth-period scores that stretched the margin back to four. Cohen added his third of the game late in the period but he and the Fords were unable to close the gap over the remaining minutes.

Phillip Valliant and Henry Millson added a goal each for the Fords. Denison's attack was led by Alex Hardt and Eddie Vita who had four and three goals, respectively.

Haverford generated a pair of scores off four extra-man opportunities while blanking the deadly Denison man-up offense on each of its three chances.

In goal for each squad, the Fords' Joe Banno and Denison's Nick Petracca each came up with eight saves for their teams.

Haverford's season continues Saturday, March 17 with a home contest at Swan Field against Centennial Conference opponent and 14th-ranked Gettysburg College.
