WESTMINSTER, Md. – Four well-timed goals led the Haverford College men's lacrosse team past host McDaniel College on Saturday night in the Fords' 4-3 Centennial Conference victory.
Haverford (2-6, 1-2 CC) received its goals from four different players while holding Green Terror (4-6, 0-3) leading scorer DJ Rickels -- who came into the game with 21 goals -- to just two on the day.
Will Sangree picked a good time to notch his first goal of the season, getting one past McDaniel goalie Christian Dallmus only 138 seconds into Saturday's contest.
Scott Chanelli won the ensuing faceoff for the Fords and raced into the attacking third to score seven seconds after Sangree's tally to provide the visiting team with a quick 2-0 lead. The goal was the defender's second of the year.
McDaniel cut the lead in half with a marker in the second period and late in the frame expected to take that one-goal deficit into the halftime break, but Haverford's Zack Cohen altered those plans with his seventh goal of the year, this one coming with 16 seconds left in the quarter.
The Fords' final timely score came late in the third after McDaniel had converted a man-up opportunity earlier which pulled the Green Terror back to within one at 3-2. Christian Clay notched his ninth of the spring for Haverford, beating Dallmus with 49 seconds showing on the third-period clock to extend the lead back to two.
McDaniel scored with 7:03 remaining but that would be the last shot to find the back of either net as Haverford goalie Joe Banno picked up his third save of the period two minutes later and then the Fords' defense limited their hosts to one off-the-mark shot in the final minute to close out the road victory.
Banno finished with 10 saves for the Fords while Dallmus registered five stops in defeat.
Haverford limited McDaniel to 1-for-5 in extra man opportunities and though the Fords were out shot 34-21, they allowed just 13 of those 34 shots to find there way on goal where Banno's solid day between the pipes helped give the Fords an important league win.
The eighth-ranked Red Devils from Dickinson College (8-1, 2-0 CC) visit Swan Field in Haverford's next outing, a Centennial match-up Saturday, March 31 at 3 p.m.
