Fords close out season with win over Mules

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Haverford College's men's lacrosse team broke out to a six-goal lead after the opening period then cruised to a 14-11 win over host Muhlenberg College in Centennial Conference action on Saturday evening.

Haverford (6-8, 4-4 CC) scored the game's first six goals against the Mules (2-12, 0-8) to carry a 6-0 lead into the second period where it notched three more before heading into the halftime break with a 9-3 lead.

The opening-period flurry came from six different Fords. Henry Millson opened the scoring with his fifth of the season and Scott Chanelli followed, with his fifth of the year, nine seconds later. Henry Lanier netted his single-season best 11th goal six minutes later then Geoff Geppert, Phillip Valliant and Christian Clay, with their 11th, 26th and 17th on the year, respectively, closed out the 15 minute explosion.

The Fords out scored the Mules 4-1 in the third to extend their lead to 13-4 before the stubborn hosts scored the game's final seven to close the gap.

Millson finished with a team-high three goals in the win for Haverford. Will Sangree, Jack Bodine, Valliant and Clay added two goals apiece. Zack Cohen provided a team-best three assists.

Defensively, Dillon Hamill and Chanelli registered three caused turnovers each and goalkeepers Joe Banno and Ryan Herz-Thyhsen collected 12 and four saves, respectively, between the pipes in their final collegiate game. Alexander Douglas -- playing in his last game along with Hamill, Sangree, Cohen, Lanier and Valliant -- picked up four ground balls to tie for the team lead with Chanelli.

Saturday night's win closes out the 2012 schedule for the Fords who were chasing the fourth and final playoff spot for the league tournament heading into the day. McDaniel College's win over host Swarthmore College in the afternoon secured the final berth for the Green Terror.
