FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Haverford College men's lacrosse team (1-2), went on the road for a 9-5 victory over host Mary Washington (2-2) on Saturday afternoon at Battleground Turf, posting an early season win over the Eagles for the second consecutive year. The Fords prevailed in the defensive battle, with Matt Richards and Jonathan Moon each adding a pair of goals in the win. Andy Tiesto stopped 10 shots between the pipes to help the Fords make the most of the trip to Virginia.

Mary Washington opened the scoring just two minutes into the contest with Garrett Keogh finding Hunter Tipton for the first tally, but Haverford took advantage of a penalty on UMW as Jonathan Moon tallied a player-up strike to knot the contest at 1-1. Mary Washington had an answer minutes later, but Andrew Arth scored his first of the contest with 4:27 remaining in the first, taking a feed from Eric Dahlberg and finishing past the goalkeeper.

Drew Hoffman recorded his first goal of the season with 2:05 remaining, and the two teams headed into the second quarter with the Fords holding a one-goal lead. JD Nozemack tallied an unassisted strike to open the second, as sustained runs were few and far between in the early goings of the contest. Antonin Hoppmann-Salario tallied an assist to Dahlberg, who connected on a goal to put the Fords up yet again. UMW had an answer from Mike Seraphin-Jones, but Richards made sure that Haverford went into the intermission with the lead with an unassisted tally with 2:48 to play.

The final 30 minutes of the contest saw the Fords with a stifling defensive pressure. Jackson Popeck tallied to knot the score at 5-5 early in the stanza, but Haverford closed the contest on a 4-0 run. Jason Borsari and Buddy Pelish caused key turnovers while Teddy Carlin made the most of his opportunities from the X down the stretch. Will Graves put the Fords up for good with his goal with 5:58 left in the third, and first-year Reid Tietjen gave Haverford some insurance.

The Eagles looked for any way back into the contest in the fourth quarter, but were hampered by some penalties as Bryce Ridge went to the penalty box for a slash, allowing Moon tally  another huge insurance goal. Richards added the ninth of the contest with just over 90 seconds remaining as Moon was credited with the assist. Pelish had a caused turnover and four ground balls to pace the Fords, while Samuel Millie added three ground balls. In total, eight different Fords were credited with a caused turnover.

The five goals allowed were the fewest for Haverford since an 11-5 win over Baldwin Wallace on March 10, 2020. The Fords now will focus on preparations for the annual spring break trip out to Colorado to face both Colorado College (March 5) and Kenyon (March 7) at 5,994 feet elevation in Colorado Springs.
