Fords rally falls short in Centennial opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford men's soccer team cut into the McDaniel College halftime lead with an early second half goal but the Green Terror withstood the continued Fords pressure and then iced the game with a late score for a 3-1 Centennial Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Walton Field.

After falling behind 2-0 over the opening 45 minutes Haverford (2-3, 0-1) came out for the second stanza determined to battle their way back into the match.

Following a pair of shots in the early minutes of the half, the Fords got on the scoreboard in the 58th on a header into the lower left corner from Alejandro Rettig y Martinez off a free kick by Matt Gorski.

Haverford out shot McDaniel (4-4, 1-0) by an 8-3 margin over the remaining 32 minutes and thrilled the crowd of nearly 200 with several near-miss opportunities while searching for the equalizing goal.

Finally, though, with even the Haverford back row pushed up towards the offensive end the Green Terror got a ball down the left sideline for a two-on-one breakaway and found the back of the net for the back-breaker with 10 clicks left on the clock.

Overall the Fords out shot the Green Terror by a 19-10 margin. Each goalie, Jamey Applegate for Haverford and Benjamin Knight for McDaniel, finished the game with three saves apiece.

Getting back on the winning track will have to come on the road for Haverford as they'll spend the next two games away from Walton Field, first at Gwynedd-Mercy College on September 23 in a non-conference game and then at Johns Hopkins for a Centennial match-up on September 26.
