Shoremen sink Fords in men's soccer

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – A late rally fell just short for the Haverford College men's soccer team in a 2-1 loss to host Washington (Md.) College in Centennial Conference action Wednesday night.

The Shoremen (3-12-1, 1-6-1 CC) jumped ahead 2-0 in the first 15 minutes of the game but Haverford (6-10, 1-7 CC) pulled within one with a goal from Matt Wetherell in the 74th minute.

The Fords were able to generate a pair of scoring chances against a packed in Washington defense in the final 15 minutes but the first shot sailed wide and the second was stopped by Shoremen goalie Chris Phipps who finished the game with 13 saves.

Perhaps the best scoring chance by the Fords was in the 26th minute when a header from David Restrepo looked like it was going to find the back of the net but a Washington defender somehow got to the ball before it crossed the goal line for a team save to keep the Fords off the scoreboard until their late goal.

The Fords outshot their hosts by an 18-7 margin including 15-4 in shots on goal. Haverford also generated more set piece opportunities with a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Next up for the Fords will be their final game of the 2009 season, a home contest Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against 6th-ranked Swarthmore College.
