Late goal gives men's soccer win over Aggies

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Max Stossel's goal in the closing minutes of Wednesday afternoon's game at Delaware Valley College gave the Haverford College men's soccer team a 3-2 non-conference victory over the host Aggies.

Stossel buried a shot into the low, right corner of the goal with 3:50 remaining in the game to break a 2-2 deadlock that had held for more than 52 minutes.

Haverford (5-5) scored twice within the first 11 minutes for a quick two-goal lead over Delaware Valley (6-4-1). Matt Wetherell opened the scoring in the third minute with his first goal of the year and then eight minutes later Edward Gracia notched his second of the year to provide the visiting Scarlet and Black with a 2-0 lead.

Tom Antonucci single-handedly brought the Aggies back, though, with a pair of goals a little more than three minutes apart late in the opening stanza in the 31st and 34th minutes.

Up to that point, Haverford goalie Jeff Rickert, making his first-ever start in goal, had recorded three saves to keep the Fords in front before Antonucci was able to get two past him.

Neither Rickert nor Aggies goalie DJ Meisinger would allow another score until Stossel's in the 87th. Matt Gorski took off on a breakaway and fed Stossel deep in the box where he was able to beat Meisinger with the game-winner.

Rickert earned the win in goal making four saves while Meisinger took the loss also registering four saves.

The Fords return to league action in their next game when the Bullets from Gettysburg College come to Haverford's Walton Field for a Centennial Conference match-up Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
