HAVERFORD, Pa. – Alejandro Retting y Martinez's goal in the 96th minute helped the Haverford College men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over Widener University Wednesday afternoon at Walton Field. With the victory the Fords stretched their unbeaten streak to eight games.

A physical game by both teams led to very little offense. The teams were whistled for 16 fouls each and Widener (4-7-1) was issued three yellow cards. Haverford (6-1-2) took 18 shots, but only six found their way on goal. The Pride mustered just eight shots with two coming on goal.

Haverford's first goal came in the 25th minute as Rettig y Martinez, standing near the end line, sent the ball from left of the goal to Colin Lubelczyk in the box for his first collegiate goal.

Widener evened the score five minutes into the second half. Rich Romano collected the ball near midfield and set up a streaking Derek Brubaker for a breakaway from 12 yards out.

The Pride stepped up the physicality late in the half which resulted in just six shots for HC. Two of Widener's yellow cards came in the final 10 minutes.

The Fords had a golden opportunity two minutes into overtime, but keeper Ryan Frantz made a diving stop on David Restrepo's shot from inside the box. However, Restrepo got redemption, setting up Rettig y Martinez for the golden goal from 15 yards out.

Frantz made four saves, three in the second half, for Widener. Jamey Applegate needed to make just one save in the win for Haverford.

The Fords travel to Gettysburg College Saturday for a Centennial Conference showdown at 4 p.m.
