GETTYSBURG, Pa. – All streaks have to end sometime. The Haverford College men's soccer team just wished its seven-game unbeaten string hadn't ended, 1-0, on a deflection off one of its own defenders during Saturday afternoon's Centennial Conference tilt at Gettysburg College.

The Fords (6-2-2, 3-1-1 CC) hadn't lost since their opening game of the season to the nation's then-fifth-ranked team, but Gettysburg (3-7-1, 2-2-1 CC) put an end to that string as well as Haverford's three-game win streak.

In only the game's 17th minute, Eric Hynes played give-and-go with his Gettysburg teammate, Brooks Taylor, finally getting a shot off that was partially blocked by a Haverford defender -- but behind Fords goalie Jamey Applegate -- for the contest's only score.

The host Bullets managed to hold an advantage in both shots (18-12) and shots on goal (5-3) but Haverford had twice as many corner opportunities, six, than did Gettysburg.

One-goal leads are never safe and the Fords' Dan Garfing almost erased the deficit with the game's last shot, but Gettysburg goalie Connor Darrell made the save at the 86:09 mark and neither team would produce another shot over the final three-plus minutes.

Haverford got three saves from keeper Jamey Applegate and registered a team save in the 72nd minute to keep the Bullets within one. Darrell finished the game with three saves for the hosts.

Haverford will interrupt its conference schedule with a pair of non-league games over the next week, traveling to Massachusetts to take on Wheaton (Oct. 12) and Lasell (Oct. 14) over the college's fall break.
