Fords fall to Blue Jays on late goal

HAVERFORD, Pa. - A penalty kick goal in the game's 89th minute sent the Haverford College men's soccer team to defeat, 1-0, against visiting Johns Hopkins University in Saturday's Centennial Conference opener for each team.

The Fords (3-2, 0-1 CC) out shot the Blue Jays (3-2-1, 1-0-0) by a 12-10 margin and owned a 5-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities, but a foul deep in the box at the 88:09 mark sent Hopkins' Corey Adams to the penalty mark where he converted his only shot of the day to send Haverford to a heartbreaking loss.

The scoreless deadlock had been nearly ended 10 minutes earlier when the Fords' David Robinson lofted a corner kick about six yards out from center goal where Charlie Espinosa was able to connect on a header that grazed off the top of the cross bar. Espinosa also sent a header at goal in the 66th but Blue Jays goalie Nick Cerrone was able to come up with the save.

Haverford goalie Andriy Mshanetskyy's only blemish on the day was the score off the penalty kick. He came up with three saves during the game in keeping the Blue Jays off the scoreboard until the late foul gave the visitors their best scoring chance.

The Fords slip out of conference action for their next game, a 4:30 p.m. non-conference match-up at Main Line rival Eastern University Wednesday afternoon.
