Wetherell OT header downs McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Senior Matt Wetherell headed home the game winner in Haverford College's 2-1 overtime victory against host McDaniel College Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference men's soccer action.

Wetherell's header came in the 95th minute with an assist from David Robinson, sending Haverford (7-6-1, 3-4 CC) to its fourth straight victory. McDaniel drops to 4-9-2 overall and 1-6 in the league.

Alejandro Rettig y Martinez gave the Fords an early lead in the 17th minute with his fourth goal of the year. The senior headed in a feed from Dan Garfing, beating Green Terror goalkeeper Zach Nibbelink. McDaniel searched for the equalizer but Haverford goalie Nick Kahn came up with two of his three first-half saves following the opening score, and benefited from a shot that hit the post to allow the Fords to enjoy a 1-0 lead at the break.

McDaniel found the equalizer midway through the second half getting a goal from Matthew Gillen at the 69:30 mark.

The final five minutes of regulation was a flurry of Haverford threats as the visitors nearly ended the game several times. Rettig y Martinez got off a shot at 85:02 which was saved by Nibbelink. Eleven seconds later Colin Lubelczyk's shot was saved at the line by a McDaniel defender, then Nibbelink added another save against Rettig y Martinez five seconds later. Adam Morollo hit the cross bar at 87:22 and Garfing got off a shot Nibbelink saved with 14 seconds left on the game clock.

Haverford finished with a 24-11 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage in corner kick chances.

Kahn earned the win between the pipes for Haverford with three saves while Nibbelink took the loss after registering 10 saves for the Green Terror.

The Fords hit the road for their next game heading to Collegeville, Pa., where they will take on host Urinsus College (3-10-3, 2-4-1) Wednesday night in another conference match-up.
