Men’s soccer advances to Centennial semifinals with 3-2 win

LANCASTER, Pa. - Alejandro Rettig y Martinez scored in the 80th minute to give visiting Haverford College a 3-2 victory over Franklin & Marshall College in the first round of the Centennial Conference tournament on Wednesday evening at F&M.

With the victory, the fifth-seeded Fords (10-6-1) have won seven in a row. Haverford moves on to face top-seed and host Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore on Friday, Nov. 4 in the semifinal round. Dickinson and Muhlenberg meet in the other semifinal.

F&M ends its season at 10-5-3 with Wednesday's home loss to the Fords.

Haverford scored first with an early goal by Jamie Reingruber just eight minutes in, but F&M's Eric Elicker responded with his own score seven minutes later. It was a cat and mouse game the rest of the opening half as Nikko Giannasca put the Fords ahead in the 24th minute and Ben Beaver tied it for the Diplomats in the 26th.

The four-goal shootout over the initial 26 minutes turned into a nil-nil affair until Rettig y Martinez scored the game-winner in the 80th minute to keep the Fords' season alive.

Nick Kahn made two saves in net for Haverford, while T.J. White stopped five shots for the Diplomats.

The men's soccer victory was part of a four-win day for Haverford athletics as each of its four teams -- including women's soccer, field hockey and volleyball -- playing in opening round games of their respective conference playoffs finished victorious.
