Sam Miller Named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Sam Miller has been named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and third time overall in his career after leading the Haverford College men's soccer team to a pair of shutout victories during the final week of the regular season.

Miller's efforts helped the Fords notch at 4-0 win against Ursinus and 3-0 victory against rival Swarthmore over the course of the past week. With the final two victories in the regular season, the Fords' program recording winning streak reached 12 straight games. Included in Haverford's run of success is a perfect 9-0 record in Centennial Conference play. That unbeaten and untied record in conference play marked the first such season for a men's soccer team in the Centennial Conference since Johns Hopkins in 2006.

The Fords' junior goalkeeper started his week by making five saves in 72:41 of playing time against Ursinus. Miller conceded the net to Chris Gibson for the remainder of the match with his side up 3-0 in the eventual 4-0 shutout victory. He posted his fifth shutout of the season in the regular season finale with two saves against rival Swarthmore.

In total, Miller has started and been the goalie of record in all 17 of Haverford's regular season matches. He has helped anchor a defense that has blanked the opposition eight times on the season. During the past 12 matches, Miller has been allowing just 0.52 goals against average. Each of the team's shutouts on the season have come during this record breaking win streak.

With the 9-0 mark in the Centennial Conference, men's soccer earned the right to host the Centennial Conference Tournament on Walton Field for the second time in three seasons. The Fords will open their postseason with a semifinal meeting against Wednesday's first round game winner that features Swarthmore at Johns Hopkins. The Fords will take on the winner of that match Saturday at 11 a.m. Dickinson and Franklin & Marshall will follow Haverford's semifinal with that match on Walton Field scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
