United Soccer Coaches Association Release
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Nick Jannelli added another major award to his resume as the Haverford College men's soccer junior was named to the United Soccer Coaches Association All-America team. The 2018 Centennial Conference Player of the Year garnered third-team All-America status for the first such recognition of his playing career.
Jannelli is the first Haverford player to be named a United Soccer Coaches Association All-American since 2015 Centennial Conference Player of the Year Sam Yarosh '16 was selected to the second-team during his senior season. That was the same year in which both Yarosh and Will Corkery '17 were named first-team D3Soccer.com All-Americans. Dating back to the program's inception in the early 1900s, Haverford College men's soccer players have combined to earn 82 All-American selections.
Jannelli was one of seven players who started all 19 matches for the Centennial Conference Champions this fall. He led the Centennial Conference in goals (13), assists (9), points (35), shots (71), penalty kicks (4-for-5), and game-winning goals (7). Those seven game-winning goals tied the school's single-season record which was set by Corkery and Yarosh during their aforementioned 2015 All-American campaigns. In Centennial Conference matches, Jannelli led his conference peers in goals (8), assists (4), points (20), penalty kicks (3-for-4), and game-winning goals (4).
Haverford was a perfect 11-0 this season when Jannelli found the back of the net, with his most notable goal coming in double overtime against Franklin & Marshall to win the conference title for the third time in four seasons on Walton Field. Jannelli recorded either a goal or an assist during 13 of the team's 19 matches. In addition to his seven game-winning tallies, Jannelli set up the eventual game-winner on two other occasions as he played a direct role on the game-winning goal during nine of the Fords' 14 victories this season. Those totals included a stretch when he combined for nine goals and six assists during Haverford's 11 match winning streak. The 11 match winning streak was the second-longest winning streak in school history.
Across all of Division III, Jannelli's seven game-winning goals were the fourth-highest total in the country. He also ranked among the top 50 players in goals, assists, and points despite the Fords challenging themselves with one of the toughest schedules in the nation.
Heading into his senior season, Jannelli already owns the school record with 14 career game-winning goals. He is currently tied with Mike Nelson '88 for 11th in school history with 34 career goals, while his 84 career points are the 12th highest mark in program history. Jannelli's 35 points in 2018 marked the 14th best single-season total in the College's decorated history. He has led Haverford in both goals and points during each of his three seasons, also adding the most assists during his two most recent campaigns.
In addition to his aforementioned All-American and Centennial Conference Player of the Year accolades, Jannelli was named a first-team All-Centennial Conference and first-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection. He has been named first-team All-Centennial Conference on two occasions, earning second-team honors in 2016 when he was selected as the conference's rookie of the year. Jannelli has been named the Centennial Conference Player of the Week on five occasions throughout his career, earning that recognition twice this fall.
Men's soccer won its third Centennial Conference Championship over the past four years this fall. The Fords have now made eight straight trips to the Centennial Conference Tournament and have hoisted the conference trophy four times during that span. Haverford compiled a 14-4-1 overall record this fall and before falling to New York University in penalty kicks during the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
