Vestrich-Shade takes two as Fords entertain Boston College, Bucknell

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The 43rd-ranked Haverford College men's squash team squared off Saturday against visitors from No. 33 Boston College and 26th-ranked Bucknell University with the Fords' Nathan Vestrich-Shade earning a win in both of his matches. Despite Vestrich-Shade's efforts, Haverford dropped a 6-3 decision to Boston College and fell to Bucknell by a score of 7-2.

Haverford (2-11) opened the early match of the day against BC with a 2-0 lead, courtesy of wins from Bret Marlowe at No. 9 and Arman Terzian at No. 6. Marlowe quickly downed the Eagles' Andrew Labadini, 3-0, while Terzian rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win the final two games over Robert Bohn for the thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory.

Boston College reeled off six consecutive wins, though, to stall the Fords' upset bid.

Two of the matches, at Nos. 2 and 8 were epic battles that ended up falling in favor of the Eagles.

Jonathan Nguyen dropped the first game of his match against BC's Christopher Tozzi at No. 8, but battled back to tie the score with a win in the second. That pattern was repeated in the next two games as Tozzi won the third followed by a Nguyen victory in the fourth. The pair scraped for points in the deciding game with Tozzi eking out an 11-8 win to capture the point for the visitors.

Aaron Horwitz and BC's Sam Henderson at No. 2 mirrored the Nguyen/Tozzi struggle with Horwitz capturing the second and fourth games while Henderson won the first, third and fifth.

Vestrich-Shade closed out the match against BC with a quick (11-3, 11-4, 11-1) win at No. 1 over Milo Watanabe.

The late match of the day pitted the Fords against Bucknell (9-2) with the Bison rolling into the contest after downing Boston College (8-6) in the day's middle match.

The Bison stormed to the victory by winning the first six matches at Nos. 3,6,9,2,5 and 4.

Haverford earned its first point against Bucknell with Vestrich-Shade's 3-0 win over Hayden Radovich at No. 1. John Cummings picked up the Fords' other point with a 3-1 win over Gavin McGovern at No. 7 in the final match of the day.

The Fords' regular season schedule concludes Saturday, Feb. 8 at home on the GIAC squash courts against NYU at 10:30 a.m. and Swarthmore College at 3:30 p.m.
